What are cozy mysteries?

The cozy mystery has its origins in the age of the classic British mystery, when Agatha Christie popularized the village or country house murder. Miss Jane Marple is perhaps the best known of all cozy sleuths, but many clever amateur detectives have followed in her footsteps. No longer the sole domain of the village spinster, more contemporary cozy detectives include shop owners, writers, caterers, minister’s wives, and retired professionals. Although settings and time periods vary, cozy mysteries have the following traits in common:

  • A serious crime is the basis of the story, but the emphasis is on solving the mystery and not on the gory details of the crime.
  • Suspects and victims know each other and are often part of a community or a group that shares a common interest.
  • The suspects all have a reason and an opportunity to commit the crime.
While there are often suspenseful moments, there is very little overt violence. The detective may be in danger, but emerges with minor injuries at most.

Whether you prefer village or city, contemporary or historical, there are cozies to suit. So settle into a comfortable chair and sample a mystery from the library’s collection.
